Lieko Shiga was born in 1980 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. She studied Fine Art at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, graduating in 2005. During that time she produced a series of images of her neighbors living in a block of East London council flats, drawing inspiration from paranormal photographs popular in the early days of photography. This series became Lilly, which was exhibited in Osaka, Paris, and Tokyo. In addition to participating in other group exhibitions, Shiga was the September 2006 artist in residence at the Institute of Modern Art as part of Rapt! 20 Contemporary Artists from Japan, a program of residencies, exhibitions, and events showcasing Japanese art in Australia. In 2005 Shiga received the Juror’s award as part of the Mio Photo Award, and more recently, the 33rd Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award in 2008 for her books Lilly and Canary.

BY kishin shinoyama
After leaving Light Publicity in 1968, Shinoyama began a successful career photographing subjects which ranged from portraits of pop stars to travel photographs of the Silk Road, capturing them with a fine expressive technique.
His unique character and appearance made him a mass media star and he popularized the phrase gekisha (‘agitated shot’)-a series using amateur models.
Although working on various subjects, including travel and body tattoos, he is best known for his celebrity portraits and nudes.

Ray Metzker (b1931) has dedicated his career to exploring the formal potentials of black-and-white photography, but they are not his exclusive concern. “When you look at the multiples, you are aware of patterning and so forth,” he says, “but there is still identifiable subject matter; frequently there are people there; there is a rhythm to those people.” Metzker’s 1959 thesis project, My Camera and I in the Loop, takes downtown Chicago as its subject, but renders it in experiments that tell more about photography than they do about the city. The pictures from this project were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1959-1960), and included in the issue of Aperturedevoted to the students and professors of the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (1961).
